That Magic You’re After?

It’s less magic and mystique, more ordinary, but also more exciting for your fitness and your life than you have imagined.

The magic formula for those changes you want to implement – maybe the changes are more conceptual at this point, or visually registered (like getting the body of a fitness personality) but not yet practically planned – they’re not what you’ve been betting on. In fact, there’s not even any magic involved …

No magic involved – – at least on this point, and for now.

You may have the coveted changes narrowed down to X pounds lost, maybe even defined a bit more into X workouts per week or X calories per day.

Regardless, the thing the X above, to be checked off, will often require as a sacrifice? Consistency.

And to attain consistency, it’s often better to choose the smallest, most attainable change you can imagine – first, that you can do over a little bit of time, almost too easily.

Why? Creating a minuscule shift from something you’ve already been successful at, and then building a foundation thereupon by repeating once that shift becomes easier (and it does), is a great way to continually feel accomplished. You need some “wins” for you to believe it’s worth the effort to keep going. Your belief increases via time in the trenches and the little victories that you can repeat again and again – but with added intensity or complexity as you go.

You’re already eating and drinking something, sleeping at least some, and moving your body in some way. Chances are your ultimate goal realistically has to involve some type of change in one of these areas — likely even all three. (Sorry!) But the good news is you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You just need to make it turn a little more smoothly by layering in small changes over time.

Even in the beginning, you are making changes. You just have to accept that they won’t feel as meaningful as you’d hoped; but the big stuff can’t happen without them.

If you’re already eating 7 times a day, as nutrition coaches, we would likely talk to you about whether you want to consider eating a little slower in your first few meals. Chewing your food and stopping to “rest” while you eat can make incredible shifts over time in feeling satiated from less food. Or maybe counting protein portions throughout the day is the only thing we decide you’ll do for the first 2 weeks – literally no other changes, including how you’re eating, required.

We’ve learned through 20+ years of coaching nutrition that no one outgrows the need to do the basics well. So you might as well practice them first.

As seasoned coaches, we also know that change is usually best pursued when it’s customized. And it’s probably much simpler than you think; but the tricky part that makes it hard to do it alone? What works well for one person may be a giant fail for another. You may see a friend make even a simple change and have some success, and when you try to repeat – no dice. That’s why something simple can be more easily achieved over the long run with some added accountability and a coaching-client relationship where you and your needs are understood in the making of a nutrition plan.

Consistency is simpler than we want to make it out to be, but the specifics? Those can be a pain. Commit to changing one small thing at a time, over the long run, (and an even better coach: invest in yourself and hire a coach), and you may just realize that you can do even better than that originally idealized goal – and hopefully realize that your own unique set of strengths and life experiences can help you carve out the results that truly serve you, not someone else’s version of success.
