Cut then store those fruits and veggies – prep your food and give it a chance at life!
Have you ever been guilty of frantically cleaning out or reorganizing the fridge when you come home with bags of groceries, only to realize that your precious, well-intentioned purchase of [fill in the blank with fruits and veggies you swear you’re going to start eating] has gotten slimy, or they’re growing their own vegetation?
Try something different: Before you even put them in the fridge, get them ready to eat. If you want to improve your likelihood of taking healthy snacks to work, or your kids taking them in packed lunches, bag them in individual portion sizes (reusable snack bags are great for this since fruits and veggies won’t make the bags hard to clean). If you’ll serve them at meals, a bigger bag is great. But set yourself up for success by thinking about how you’ll actually use the food you prep.
Pro skill: Think even one step ahead of that, and set out your cutting board, baggies, and any other tools you’ll need so you’re less likely to forget (or just hangrily skip) this step. (Pro skill +: Use these little containers to hold anything you don’t want to add to the soggy factor of packed salads!)
Good ideas are only as useful as they are doable – and this is an easy one! Try it out, and let us know how it went. And remember, just like we talked about in this blog post, you don’t have to make massive changes over time. Think “move the dial” instead of “flip the switch.”
